Penjom Gold Mine, Pahang

This is the first company i worked for as a Professional Geologist. I was employed as Junior Mining Geologist in Grade Control section. My day to day job involve core and drill cutting description and recording, Rock sample result interpretation and ore excavation supervision.

Work schedule arrangement consist of 10 Day work followed by 4 days holiday with daily working hours roughly 7am to 7pm.

The Gold accumulation was controlled by Penjom thrust which is NE-SW trending. The gold mineralisation stopped at the fault due to higher carbon content. Initially, the mine was extracted via shaft methodology before open pit mine was used. There was recent effort to revive the shaft method but restricted due to HSE and cost issues.

When I Passed by the area now, seems it had been taken over by another Company

G&G Software

Google Earth

I start having it since my Undergraduate. This allows me to see various places in the world and studies the landform (Geomorphology) and infer process involved. We can mark places on the map and load shapefile.

ArcGIS

I used this heavily to generate map and perform spatial data analysis. This allows multiple published map to be georeferenced and analysed together to create more comprehensive evalution

Petrel

Owned by Schlumberger, this software allows Geological and Geophysical Analysis. Well and seismic data can be interpreted to generate various map to build subsurface model. Good for smaller but detail evaluation of an area.

DecisionSpace

Owned by Halliburton, this software had similar function as Petrel. I personally like this for Regional work at it has better spatial functionality and common database (Openwork)

Geox

Used to perform prospect volumetric and risking assessment. A good calculator that can run both diterministic and probabilistic run

Microsoft PowerBI

Used for tabulated data analysis. this allow better data analysis and chart creation compared to Excel

G-Plates

This is Open Source software that i use to reconstruct plate Model and see how does the plat behave through time

 I-Handbook

I had used this free software offered by Schlumberger since i start working as Wellsite Geologist. It had user friendly unit coversion tool

Geology of Peninsula Malaysia

This will be a short summary on the geology of Peninsula Malaysia.
Image below shows the satellite image of Peninsula Malaysia with outline of the state shown.

Diagram below show the geological map of Peninsula Malaysia and the offshore area.

We can divide Peninsula Malaysia into three main segment. Western Belt, Central Belt and Eastern Belt based on their structural and stratigraphic difference.
Prospective hydrocarbon basin was mostly located in the offshore area East of Peninsula Malaysia in Malay Basin, whereas Malacca Strait is less prospective.

Fieldtrip: Vietnam_Hanoi

Objective of this Fieldtrip is to characterize the fractures observed onshore as analogue for offshore Exploration. Producing field from Basement include the famous Bach Ho Field whick flowed oil from fractured granite.

Fieldtrip area located around the famous Red River Fault in Hanoi, Vietnam. Map by Cullen below shows other main tectonic element in Southeast Asia.

Vietnam can be divided into 5 Structural blocks. The visited area consist of Northeast Block and Northwest Block

The Onshore Geological Map of Hanoi area can be observed below:
Total of 14 Locality visited during this trip. The path followed is shown below.

The younger outcrop located mostly in  the Northern part and gets older in the south

Location of the Locality visited each day is marked in maps below:

Some of the rock samples in the outcrop can be seen below:

The diagram below shows the different classification of Fracture type  (From AAPG Method 10). The outcrop pictures is showing the Character of fractures in different type of Lithology-Limestone, Gneiss and Granite.

8. Yam Fong Quarry, Segamat

Segamat Basalt, together with Kuantan Basalt occur on the southern periphery of a great geographical field of rift related alkaline basalts that extend up to Hainan Island (Hutchinson,1989). K-Ar minimum age of these rock as reported by Bignell & Snelling (1997) is 62 Ma

The basalt that we visited is in an abandoned quarry.

The quarry now filled with water.

I would like to thank my junior's for properly documenting their fieldtip. I had used the pictures and materials from their blog because i lack documenting awareness back then.
